I'm not great with words, asperger's and all, but I will try to get this out. When I was a small child, I was molested by my doctor until I no longer needed to see a pediatrition. I was not tied up and raped, but every examination included a prolonged hand down my pants and a look in his eye that frankly haunts me to this day. And I completely oppose this bill. Do you know what it means to be labeled a pedophile in modern society? To even be accused, much less charged? Your life is over, your reputation destroyed, and your word reduced to nothing. All because someone simply claimed you did something.
Now I have no problem with actual pedophiles and rapists doing the time, but the problem is in today's society if your accused of these things your guilty until found... Well, no. Even if you're found innocent, everyone knows you just "got away with it." So no, I don't want a law in this state where some pissy yuppie can get mad at his estranged uncle and say "30 years ago he molested me!". And you know it happens. You know more then a few of the men in prison for these crimes right now, being raped and tourtered and murdered for being "kiddie rapers", are in fact innocent. If it makes one child feel better it's worth it? What happened to the idea if it makes one innocent person suffer inhumane treatment it isn't? Let's not forget a lot of research discredit's the idea of "repressed memories" (which first gained popularity in the 80s when hundreds of people remembered being abused by the global satanist militant network that... errr, didn't exist in any way shape or form) or the fact that when someone is accused of such crimes their "victims" start coming out of the wood work (there was a man in NY state who was caught buying child porn from europe, by the end of the trail dozens had claimed he engaged in outlandish and widespread sexual abuse of them, and his son helped! Never mind they where all discredited and his son was cleared of all charges... After the man hung himself because of the abuse he faced in jail while he was still "presumed innocent.") You people have to think the far reaching consquences of this kind of thing through.
Also, Pete, the idea that "the average pedophile molests over 100 children" sounds like your getting your data from Law and Order or CSI or something. That just sounds like some sensational claim made by victim's rights groups to make knee-jerk legislators pass laws like this without thinking of the consquences. And stop rallying against the RCC people. This is an anti-pedophile bill. Not something designed to get those bullet proof priests. They will still be bullet proof, even if you can bring up things that happened 40 years ago.

I was molested and nearly raped from the ages of 3 and up. Today I am harassed and stalked by the friends and family members of thsese criminals. What is wrong with people? I confronted one associate and feel proud about standing up. I believe a federal mandate should be set in place to end the statutes of limitations on child sex abuse in every state. It would send a harsh warning to all molesters and rapists that they will constantly have to pay the ultimate price for their sick crimes one day.

WOW!! Denise W. You wrote exactly what I am feeling, Ever since I saw an old school picture of my 8th grade class at age 13 from a friend on face book a couple of montha ago. I've been going through all kinds of feelings all at once mainly anger because I let that priest molest me. I know it's not my fault but I'm so pissed at the bishops that knew of his dealings before he was moved on to my school to hurt me and others. If they would have turned him in right when they were told they could have saved us from who they call the king of orange counties pedophiles. They are responsible until we are cured and must help us heal NO MATTER HOW LONG OR HOW MUCH.

I read Mr. Dolce story and was compelled to write. I am 42 yrs. old and at the age of 41 experienced what the doctors call "Post Traumtic Stress Syndrome". Flashes of sexual experiences brought me back to what I thought was a terrible pig-like dream that I was embarressed about having over and over as a child, only to find out it wasn't a dream but True Reality.I am now suffering everyday. My life as I knew it no longer exists. When an experience like this happens where you wake up 35 yrs.later, and all of sudden remember, people, even family don't understand, which makes you feel more isolated and alone.
They need to pass these laws, or they are telling our grown-children that what happened to them as a child doesn't matter. I have suffered so much this past year and the person who is responsible should be held responsible in some way for taking another persons life away.

That's the problem Cathy Hesterly. The statutes of limitation criminally and civilly are different in every state. In Delaware it was pretty much the same, two years criminally and civilly. When those two years passed a sexual predator didn't need a "get out of jail" card. He, or she, was not even charged. It that unbelievable or what?

Now in Delaware there are no statutes of limitation criminally or civilly. AND we included in the 2007 Child Victims' Law a two year civil window for previously time barred cases of abuse - BY ANYONE.

Vist our CHILD VICTIMS VOICE COALITION which is still active at - www.childvictimsvoice.com See the different groups and individuals that were on board.

I testified before the Senate and House Judiciary Committees in support of that bill. I was so proud of all who worked for it.

Monday I am going to attend the 26th annual Symposium on Child Abuse sponsored by the NATIONAL CHILDREN'S ADVOCACY CENTER based in Huntsville, Alabama. It is the LARGEST child advocacy group in the United States.

I am also on a national committee to support victims and survivors of childhood sexual abuse. We are working on a handbook to help the ordinary person understand the process of advocating and lobbying for legislative change.

THERE SHOULD BE NO STATUTES OF LIMITATION WHERE CHILDHOOD SEXUAL ABUSE IS CONCERNED.

I am from Jacksonville Texas. I have a 31 year old son who has just revealed he was raped and sexually assualted at the age of 12 by a close family friend. When we went to the police to file a report on Feb. 12 2010, we were told the statued of limitations was up. I don't think there is a statue on traffice violations in Texas. Is that more important than a childs innocenses, their childhood and their joy being taken from them? I will help lobby and fight to the end to have this statue made retroactive for all children who were violated by a sick perverted monster who should be hung slowly by the neck.

Indeed Advocate1, it is worth the effort. As a survivor, I can tell you that I have had years go by where every day I had to think of a reason not to end my life. I still have days like that, and it's been some 25 years since I was sexually abused. It is a life sentence. Looking back, it was also not helpful to hear from psychologists that they were amazed I was still alive. You have to tell yourself that while you wish you'd never been born, there are dozens of others who are glad you were. I'll never forget my aunt's words to me: You can only kill yourself if your body will not be found and no one will miss you. It's as black and white as that. It's about life and death. Protect Our Kids First is not asking for much and damn the people who oppose their propositions.

While it would be difficult to prosecute a case after so many years, victims deserve the right to seek justice. Other important things to consider - once a monster, always a monster. Pedophiles continue to abuse until they are stopped. There are almost always multiple victims who have been brutalized. If one victim comes forward, even if their case cannot be successfully prosecuted, this can open the door for other victims, possibly with more recent incidents to report, to reach out, increasing the likelihood of a conviction. Also, there are rare occasions where a pedophile will confess when confronted with their crimes. If attempting to prosecute a case from the past helps a survivor to find peace, or saves one child, it is worth the effort.

Absolutely, all criminal and civil statutes of limitation must be removed. There should also be a civil window of at least two years for bringing forward cases of childhood sexual abuse -BY ANYONE.

Religious denominations, Catholic, Protestant, Jews and so on should be leading the parade to get this done.

Florida bishops should be instructing the state Catholic Conference to support this and they should be supporting it themselves from the pulpit, from the parishes, from the diocesan newspapers, by postcard and e-mail campaign. It is the morally right thing to to do.

They should try it!

More information about tools the RCC will use to deflect.

While volunteers for catholic charities do wonderful work, we must remind ourselves that there exist many other similar charities. The Bishops will use in their arguments that they would no longer be able to support this organization if we held them accountable for their crimes.

First of all, catholic charities is primarily financed by our tax dollars. Volunteer work, workers are not paid, is at times logged at $15/hour. If Catholic charities was not a profit stream for the vatican, then they simply wouldn't do it.

Finally, there are lots of good and decent organizations that are ready to take over at any time. Bottom line is that we wouldn't miss a beat, we wouldn't miss catholic charities. In fact these organizations don't often get the money due to catholic charities getting to it first through their political contacts giving them heads up. The RCC has more grant writers than any other organization, now figure it out.

Again, we need the good US citizens to help victims.

Finally, there are lots of good and decent organizations that are ready to take over at any time. Bottom line is that we wouldn’t miss a beat, we wouldn’t miss catholic charities. In fact these organizations don’t often get the money due to catholic charities getting to it first through their political contacts giving them heads up. The RCC has more grant writers than any other organization, now figure it out.

Again, we need the good US citizens to help victims.

Thank you Toni

"Derailed" is mildly stated. Childrens lives are destroyed well into the future. The more violent the pedophile the greater the damage to the child.

Over 70% of chaos in society is a direct result of childhood trauma. Sadly this "religion" seems to thing accountability doesn't count when it comes to them. Society pays over $200 billion dollars a year in tax dollars as a result of childhood trauma (child rape and sodomy are not the only traumas experienced). We need to face this issue head on and to change laws.

Unfortunately the Catholic Church, in its efforts to hide the exposure of their crimes, prevents laws from passing that would benefit ALL of society by lobbying. You would think our elected officials would stop listening to them, but the perks are too good.

Check out childrescuebill. org to see countless studies and the effects of childhood trauma.

Please continue your efforts to expose them, and don't stop. The Catholic church lies and deceives. I wonder how many lies it will take our elected officials to finally ignore them.

We need the good and caring US citizens to demand laws change now. Most importantly to pay attention to those elected and up for election that have ties to that organization.

Protect Our Kids First legislation was heard on Tuesday 3/9/10, by the Senate Criminal Justice Committee here in Florida. The legislation is Senate Bill 870, and there is also a House Bill 525. I hope to bring attention to this immensely important issue of protecting Florida's children from predator sex offenders, by my own personal experiences.

I am the mom of a son, who was sexually abused as a child by our parish priest. The abuse that he suffered, derailed his young life at the tender ages of 13-15 years. It injured our whole family enormously. It has been a dark, painful, difficult, journey. I can attest first hand, to the critical importance of the abolishment of Statute of Limitations Laws (S.O.L.), for child sex crimes both civilly and criminally.

By the the age of 18, in 2005, our son's best efforts had failed to bring criminal justice. Therefore the only recourse left for accountability, justice and for the protection of other children, was to bring a civil action against the perpetrator and the institutions that not only protected the predator, but with knowledge of his crimes, they continued to move him to different work assignments, where other children were sexually abused. Fortunately in our son's case the S.O.L. had not run out.

The day the civil suit was filed, the priest was at last removed from youth ministry (the priest had been quietly sent to a parish another state).

Also, of monumental importance, because of the civil action, the documents of the work assignment history of this priest, were court ordered (coming from from several different states as well as Peru) to be turned over for review. Contained in these documents, was evidence of a 20 year history of sexual misconduct and abuse of minors by the priest. The civil case documents were turned over to law enforcement and the priest was finally arrested in 2008, and subsequently convicted of a felony sexual offense in July of 2009.

In conclusion, there should be NO time limits/statute of limitations imposed on sexual abuse crimes against children. Factual, current, statistics prove that the majority of children are unable to report their abuse until well into their adult years. Both civil & criminal accountability, publically names the perpetrators and puts them on record, thus bringing accountability and can therefore keep our children safe from the “free-pass” the predators have been getting to perpetuate their horrific crimes on generations of our children.

To the pope and bishops,

Satan tells me you guys are telling everyone you know me, please stop. This is an enormous universe and I have no idea of who you people are. Please stop using my name or acting as if you know me, you don't.

Good people don't need you to falsely promote me for your agenda.

Another note: Those with parents that caught them were given a contract to sigh along with a little money, usually $35,000 to $50,000. The contract stated that the rape was accidental and if they spoke to anyone, the money would have to be returned.

Imagine many couldn't pay the money back, so they remained silent. This shows how deceitful this organization really is. They are simply liars. And any politician who stands by them has proven themselves also as a liar and deceiver, vote them out.

Mike, the RCC is the #1 pedo protector. In states where cases were allowed to come forward, keep in mind insurance paid the cost so not to target specific organizations, over 85% of the cases were against the RCC. In fact less than 15% were all other religions, schools and organizations combined. They have been caught in lies again as they claim others were the same percentages, proved wrong.

Next, the vatican including the current pope demanded cover ups. The document issued on how to save face "Crimes of Solicitations" was distributed to all bishops and were told to deny its existence. This document also had secret written over it, instructed to move the priests around and to threaten excommunication to those who spoke about it, like being sent to hell.

When caught with the document they claimed the secrecy was to protect the child. From what asked? Embarrassment was the answer. If they cared about the child then why didn't the document state; make sure the child's parents are told, see to it the child gets medical help or even to go to public authorities to help the child. The reality is they threatened the small children with goons sent down from the diocese. They moved the priest around so the child wouldn't see them and say "That's who sodomized me." And these are "God's children protectors".

What amazes me is that every legislature knows they are criminal in their actions but choose to ignore the citizens for favors by this organization.

All I can say is EXPOSE THEM. And do not vote in anyone who might seem to have any affiliation with their organization.

I was an Alter boy who was molested by father eleuterio ramos and never told no one until about 3 months ago on face book I saw an old school pictures that brought back very bad memories which a psychiatrist told me that they were suppressed memories coming out. finally called the police dept and gave my statement and filed the report. I'm 44 now and ever since this picture saw I have been going through alot of emotions but can't afford to get help and what I really want is the publicity on the church because they're pushing a measure that says if your over 40 you can't sue the church but only the person.ramos who is dead now but the church had they're hand in this by passing ramos off to other churches to hurt other kids.THEY KNEW OF HIS SICKNESS AND KEPT HIM AROUND CHILDREN. You should read Eleuterio ramos orange county king of pedophiles on the web. This is not right for us victims to be treated so unfairly and the church not helping us out for they're part

BTW, my comments refer to prepubescent children who experienced life threating traumas that were never treated. And it was not their fault it was not treated, please don't blame them for coming out late. It was the physical change in the brain that blocks the mind from access as an auto protective mechanism to preserving some sense of sanity. An unumaginable and cruel life sets in.

To magister. Understandably the amount of trauma and the frequency of trauma will determine the degree a child escapes life, without their control. While I do agree the sooner an adult is able to realize the child is in trauma, the sooner help can be sought. Unfortunately many times, along with the trauma, are severe threats. Ever hear of a child mentally pushing their mind away from their body? This is the onset of dissociation.

In the cases of severe trauma, there is a physical change in the brain that occurs, these many times last a life time causing mental illness. It is the escape throughout life that prevents the child from coming forward. "Mental Illness" caused by pedophiles is the perfect crime. It will take forever for some victims to understand why they were so ill until it is too late because they will live a long life of escape, statutes now protects the pedo.

If you find out that a medication you took 30 years ago caused you to go into a comma and when you wake you should have the right for justice. Likewise a trauma is similar to a comma, a life missed, you should research and get a better understanding.

In your personal case, if when you were traumatized you were able to get early help, that's great. If not, and it were life threatening, you might become a good study why you were so different than others who experienced the same.

My entire life has been one of trauma after trauma. Physical violence from parents, spouse, 1 rape, 1 attempted rape, 2 different times starting when I was about 9 years old naked men in car's approached me. I know trauma. Department of Children and Families tell us that 4-5 children a DAY die from abuse from parents and caregivers...I can only imagine how many more suffer from years and years of abuse such as severe beatings, cigarette burns, emotional and other types of physical abuse. Sexual abuse, yes that too. I can understand why one would not feel safe or emotionally ready to tell when this abuse happens, but I cannot understand trying to seek legal sanctions so many years after the abuse. For the reasons I described above.
I cannot for any reason get behind a law that only needs another persons word that something happened and that is enough for conviction. Not in this vindictive, low moralled society. Children in school blame teachers that give them a bad grade or detentions. Teens who stayed out all night lie and say they were kidnapped. Bitter ex spouses use claims of sexual abuse all the time for retribution. Heck, I could get mad at anyone and say they molested me. I do not mean to make light of the horror anyone has suffered but if legal recourse is not your choice at the time or shortly after, or if there is REAL PROOF, I think counseling is the answer.
I do not see how anyone could say that the law favors pedophiles now...except maybe the priests. I have never understood how they could get away with their behavior for years with no punishment...Please explain to me how the law is in favor of the pedophiles over the victim (except for Mark Foley)

It is about time we began addressing trauma in children. Not all trauma is caused by rape, though it is the worst. Those interested in understanding the effects of trauma on children might like to know that over 70% of all chaos in society has a common root cause, trauma. You might check out childrescuebill.org there are many studies there.

At last things are turning around in the favor of Survivors of Sexual Child Abuse
and hopefully soon overturn the present law that favors pedophiles.
It's an outrage that such law exist, and it must be erased fron the State of Florida.
Men and Women of conscience must write their senators and representatives in the state of Florida to push this legislation through in the Senate is BILL SB 870 and in the Legislature is BILL HB 525.
Thank you for your support!!!!

To magister. Good question. First let me state that most pedophiles, that is those being addressed here, average over 100 victims throughout their lifetime. That makes for lots of witnesses. In some cases there were actually other non-victim witnesses.

Keep in mind there are no statutes of limitations on murder, yet more often the witness is dead.

If you are not aware, the worst crimes against humanity is child sodomy. If you want to understand the effects, watch themovie "Click" with Adam Sandler. Even though this movie has nothing to do with abuse, the remote control is in effect the trigger that causes the victim to withdraw back into the trauma. In the end of the movie when Adam woke up to realize a complete lost life, the viewers were relieved as he had a 2nd chance. Victims don't get that chance.

I feel terrible for Mr. Dolce and anyone like him who have suffered.
My question is, after 10,20, 30, 40 years, what proof is there that a crime was comitted? Are we now to convict someone of what is actually a life sentence as a sex offender just on anyones's accusation? Have we decided to throw away the condition of proof for a conviction of a crime?
Sounds like very slippery slope to me.

Thanks Michael. I too was a victim of sodomy by catholic priests from ages 8 to 10, once gang sodomized by four. Today, one is a bishop who helps stop laws from passing and claims only a few bad priests did this sort of thing. Amazing coming from a violent pedophile who sodomized.

NY law makers have diluted down a bill to favor the cathpolic churches requests. Imagine that, victims suffer a life time of mental illness and the church who covered up the abuses gets their way. I wish we would fire all our elected officials.

Fact is that the most violent pedophiles will traumatize a child for many years into thefuture, sometimes they never wake. Those who wake up from traumas in their 40's, 50's, 60's and later where generally abused the worst. These law makers just don't get it here in NY state.

The most horrible trauma is waking up from it to realizing a lost life. Add to this that the catholic church gets what they want over you, yet they were the enables. Out for money and reputation first. They then have their crusade who love to call victims liars. Guess there must be a satan, catholics.

Michael, as a fellow victim of molestation and abuse as a child at the hands of our parish priest in New York. I whole heartly support this bill and you efforts on behalf of the children in the state of florida. I suggest to all who read about this bill to follow the actions of the Catholic Church here in florida as they spend thousands of dollars on lobbyests in their efforts to defeat this bill. There are powerful forces at work to defeat a bill one might expect passed easily. The Catholic Church is one of those powers.

Thanks for printing this story. Michael Dolce is like a son to us, and this has become his "mission in life." He is a gentleman of the highest character and reputation and we fully endorse his efforts to aid victims of sexual abuse. Let's hope the legislature of Florida feels the same way.

Michael, God will bless you for these efforts. No legal manuevering should ever stand in the way of a person paying the penalty for the brutal crimes against another human being and especially the young and others who can not defend themselves and must succumb to whims of their violators, many times over and over again.

Thank you for reporting on my brother's efforts. While he has walked a long road, there are painful, long miles ahead to rectify what is an obvious need.
