Derided as ‘discriminatory’ and under a national spotlight, Senate redefines what it means to be family friendly in Florida

by Michael C. Bender | March 18th, 2010

“This is a bill for job development. It’s not a bill for film evaluation,” said Sen. Don Gaetz, R-Niceville.

Gaetz amended his bill today to remove a provision that would have barred movies with “nontraditional family values” from a bonus tax credit worth 5 percent of production costs. Gay rights advocates called the provision, which still remains in the House bill, “1950s-style movie censorship.”

Since we wrote about the little-noticed provision, one House Democrat dropped his support for the bill and the New York Times and L.A. Times have written about the proposal.

  1. Seth Platt Says:

Thank you, there is enough ‘God Awful’ family entertainment coming out of Florida already. Can we entertain adults and turn off the TV for children please?
