Senate Majority Leader DLP: I’m going to open a can of whoop-ass on Riveraby Dara Kam | February 15th, 2010
Senate Majority Leader Alex Diaz de la Portilla is likely to announce his entree into the Congressional race for U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart’s seat very soon.
Diaz de la Portilla, who is term-limited out of office this year, is traveling to Naples this week to drum up support for his candidacy for the district that stretches across the state from Broward and Miami-Dade County to the West Coast.
Mario Diaz-Balart, who won his last election with just 53 percent of the vote, is leaving his seat to run for his brother Lincoln’s seat after Lincoln Diaz-Balart declared he won’t seek re-election in the fall.
State Rep. David Rivera, the powerful House budget chairman, is also seriously considering abandoning his state Senate race and jumping into the Congressional battle for the open District 25 seat.
Diaz de la Portilla said he’s going to give Rivera “an old-fashioned ass-whooping” although he calls Rivera, a fellow Cuban American from Miami-Dade County, a friend.
“I think I’ve actually made good policy over the years. I haven’t just been here doing political hack work like him,” Diaz de la Portilla, R-Miami, said.
And the Majority Leader is ready to pull out the stops if Rivera tries to use the $1 million he’s collected for his state Senate campaign on the Congressional race.
“I guarantee you someone will file a complaint against him. It’s illegal for him to use one dime of his senate campaign” on the Congressional race, even to raise his name recognition in the district, where DLP says he’s got a three-to-one edge.
“If he uses the money given for one purpose for another purpose, I guarantee you I will go after him with everything I have,” Diaz de la Portilla said.
Calls to Rivera haven’t been answered yet.
