Rubio’s $133.75 barber shop bill wasn’t charged to GOP, spokesman saysby George Bennett | February 25th, 2010
While the expense showed up on the Republican AmEx, Rubio paid the tab at Churchill’s Barber Shop himself and never charged it to the state GOP, a Rubio spokesman Alex Burgos said today.
Still, the expenditure generated the kind of tonsorial attention lavished on Bill Clinton for his Christophe-administered Air Force One clip job in 1993 or John “Two Americas” Edwards for his $400 coiffures during the 2008 presidential campaign.
“An expensive haircut, it looks like,” said Gov. Charlie Crist, who’s running against Rubio in a nationally watched GOP Senate primary.
MSNBC political guru Chuck Todd mentioned the haircut — and Crist’s campaign circulated the clip to reporters.
“I don’t think that $133 spa visit was meant to influence elections,” U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston said.
Even Palm Beach County GOP Chairman Sid Dinerstein brought up the haircut while defending Rubio.
“The issues in the country are way greater than who got a haircut.,” said Dinerstein, who’s officially neutral in the Crist-Rubio primary and said he saw “nothing egregious” in Rubio’s American Express bills.
