Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson is livid over this New York Times report that President Obama will call for an end to NASA moon missions and privatization of future astronaut launches when he unveils his budget plan next week.

Nelson, who as a congressman flew on a 1986 Space Shuttle mission, ripped Obama’s “green-eyeshade-wearing advisors” for pushing the idea and said he will “stand up and fight for NASA, and for the thousands of people who stand to lose their jobs.”

Read his entire statement after the jump….

“ If early reports for what the White House wants to do with NASA are correct, then the president’s green-eyeshade-wearing advisors are dead wrong. And I, for one, intend to stand up and fight for NASA, and for the thousands of people who stand to lose their jobs.

“ Look, our space program is the very reason very we have products like GPS systems, special firefighter equipment, climate change and hurricane satellites, auto airbags, and health care devices such as kidney and heart pumps and Lasik surgery.

“ NASA also has enabled America to have the most advanced satellite technology for national security purposes.

“ And it has been NASA that has inspired generations of young Americans to pursue careers in science, technology and engineering – keeping the U.S. a global leader in those fields. ”

  1. AMS Says:

Nelson has known about this for a while.

He also knew that Obamacare does NOT include Tort Reform, Portability, and SEVERE medicare cuts.

Nelson needs to retire. Tired of bs he keeps pumping out.

Where was Nelson all this time when he KNEW Canaveral was being closed?

    What a wonker!

  2. Amanda Says:

Obama shows how out of touch he is with the space program. Instead of joining Americans in remembering our fallen heroes from Apollo 1, Challenger, and Columbia, he axes our future human spaceflight program. He is snubbing all those who made sacrifices for NASA. Yet Obama increases spending on our wars overseas. Is this what the Nobel Peace Prize is about?

  3. Ryan Says:

Agreed…Obama’s lack of wisdom, and closed mindedness over making his health plan, and bailout plan work are causing the destruction of what created alot of the technology we used today.

I wonder if my kids in the future are going to aspire to be Russian cosmonauts instead of AMERICAN astronauts…Obama GET A CLUE.

  4. Tom Says:

Nelson indeed needs to retire and NOW!!!!
Nelson has become irrelevant. Great vote yesterday to increase the debt ceiling by 1.9 trillion Mr. Nelson.

  5. Nelson Retire Now Says:

Years of respect for Mr Nelson are now gone. Much like one ah-shet wipes out all the att-a-boys a person ever gets in their life. Blind support of the health care bill by Nelson shows he is borderline socialist-marxist and he needs to go. If he did not support Obama and all the socialist BS he should have stood tall and announced same at the beginning. Bill Nelson is OUT just like all the other career politicians.

  6. Woody Says:

Lasik surgery as a benefit of NASA?? Excuse me, but this was discovered by accident in the then Soviet Union when a teenager’s eye was injured by glass fragments in a fight. Granted, the application of lasers instead of scalpels was part of the NASA contribution, but the basic technique was an accidental discovery in the USSR.

  7. Gets you mad Says:

Nasa’s days are over!!! We cannot aford to keep people employed we certainly dont need people in outerspace. Lets spend the money on this planet and try to fix current problems and not bankrupt the future citizens.

  8. Greg Says:

I thought Obama was to exclude Military Defense from any spending cuts?

    NASA is Military Defense!!!

We toss trillions down the drain but an agency actually produces a tangible result, THAT MUST BE ELIMINATED!!!

We are witnessing the decline of our civilization.

  9. Bruce Says:

    But there’s a silver lining to all this; the jobs stimulis will include transitional training for US-based aerospace engineers in one of three languages of their choice;

    Chinese, Russian, or Indian

  10. Bruce Says:

Also there’s word the JFK Space Center will cease all launch programs in order to facilitate conversion into a long-term refugee camp. The Vehicle Assembly Building will make a fine multi-story housing complex.

Bankrupt future citizens? Too LATE…a 100 generations out will be paying for Obama’s and the voters who voted for him. What a mistake. Technology DRIVES OUR ECONOMY…NO TECHNOLOGY…NO ECONOMY

    No economy THIRD WORLD COUNTRY….

Not to mention hard working citizens are paying for BUMS who sit at home collect foodstamps, and have no aspirations TO EVER GET A JOB. (Not talking to those laid off). You want to save some money? You want to no bankrupt future citizens? DOWN WITH SOCIALISM PROGRAMS. DOWN WITH SOCIALIST IDEALS…

    DOWN WITH OBAMA
