Delayed fireworks after Senate hopeful Bob Smith visits Palm Beach County GOP meeting

Bob Smith, the former New Hampshire Senator who now lives in Sarasota and is making a longshot bid for the GOP Senate nomination against better-known rivals Charlie Crist and Marco Rubio, pitched his candidacy at the Palm Beach County Republican Party’s monthly meeting tonight in West Palm Beach.

Smith didn’t speak ill of Crist or Rubio, but said his 12 years in the Senate (1991-2003) give him experience and seniority his rivals lack to push the conservative agenda in Washington.

“I know that this has been a very active quote-unquote two-person race. That’s the way it’s all reported,” Smith told the GOP activists. “It’s seven months away, folks. Straw polls and polls don’t mean a heck of a lot now. Anything can happen. All I ask is if you’re not committed, keep an open mind.”

Things got heated after Smith left.

During an open-microphone time at the end of the meeting, conservative activist and Rubio supporter Javier Manjarres reminded the audience that Smith wrote a letter of endorsement for Democrat John Kerry in 2004. Then Manjarres read from the letter.

Smith supporter John Parsons took to the microphone to call Manjarres’ remarks “a very cheap shot, and there is another side to the story.” He recounted that Smith endorsed Kerry only after President George W. Bush and Karl Rove supported John Sununu against Smith in a 2002 GOP primary.

“Bush and Rove stabbed (Smith) in the back,” Parsons said.

Another Smith supporter, local conservative radio talker and state House candidate Dick Farrel, then called Rubio a “38-year-old, big-mouth, lying loser lawyer” who wasn’t tough enough on illegal immigrants and abortion or supportive enough of gun rights when he was speaker of the Florida House.

  1. Florida Republican Voters Says:

OMG! I didnt know Bob Smith endorsed Liberal John Kerry over Pres. Bush Just because Bush didnt endorse Smith??! And Smith says his campaign is princeables over politics? Ya right! This is all we need is another D.C. RINO insider! Us Republicans are with a true Republican and thats Marco Rubio….

  2. CowBoy Bill Says:

Dick Ferral was loud and very rude at our meeting tonight! I dont think Dick Ferral is running with a full deck of cards up stairs,if you know what I mean… It seems that all the crazy people are followers of Bob Smith! Psssssst… Bob has no chance. He has no money in the bank and is not even polling!

  3. Susan Says:

sounded like Smith hangs our with a bunch of racist supporters. I am hearing that the person who made the racial slurs Javier Manjarres spoke of was Dick Farrel himself.

Did anyone catch Farrel giving a High-5 to that KKK kid wearing the black coat and hat? What is his name again?

  5. Bernie Says:

Did the PB Post find out why her good friend, Robert Wexler, threw Lois Frankel under the bus (just like Hillary) to endorse Ted Deutch?

Typical Wexler, woman can’t cut it.

If you want more taxing and spending, Deutch and his comrades will continue that path.

Democrats censor other democrats. No one has a chance. But they are dying out, maybe the next generation is more considerate and will listen to other democrats.

  6. From New Hampshire Says:

Since when did a conservative come from New Hampshire? That is the liberal nest of of New England. If George Bush didn’t endorse Smith then he knew he (Smith) was a RINO. Naturally, Smith proved him right when he endorsed one of the greatest liberals of all time the great make believe war hero John Kerry and his ketsup company stealing wife. I would be willing to bet the decent folks of New Hampshire run this POS out of their state. Now its our turn to run both he and Crist out at the polls in the August 2010 primary.
Just two RINO’s out in the cold!

  7. PBREC Member Says:

Why does the PBREC even let low-lifes like Manjarres speak when they aren’t even members. All this loser does is travel around the state starting trouble. Even Allen West dumped him.

  9. Bob Says:

Smith didn’t endorse Kerry. He wrote Kerry a letter and Kerry, the typical Dem., published it. He explains it on his website at http://www.friendsofsenatorbobsmith.com.

Ferrel may be passionate for his candidate, but no more so than Javier with his crazy talk.

I think Floridians are making a big mistake by not taking the time to check out Senator Smith. He has a lot to offer and is the one true conservative in the race on all the major issues. And Smiths seniority would sure give Florida a boost in the Senate.

Once the general voting public get a chance to hear him, I think opinions will change. I know mine did.

  10. RINO HUNTER Says:

We will never forget Marco Rubio’s scam on property tax, it was all a publicity stunt, and in the end he never really supported it. He supported the 1.35% property tax reform because, legally he new it could never pass. He was loud and abusive to other members in the house, running full steam out of a conference room so he could slam the gavel on a fellow Republicans. Rubio acted like a little tyrant when he was the speaker. He was threatened, bullied, and acted like the punk he is. Let’s keep these liberal, illegal immigration loving two faced RINO Republicans from becoming Senators! We have embarrassed our party enough.

  12. George Blumel Says:

Bob Smith was allowed to speak because he is a registered candidate on the Repub ticket. It was a courtesy to him even tho he is quite irrelevant to the race. He did express a couple of conservative positions which are also held by Rubio so he didn’t distinguish himself from the man he and his supporters are trying to put down in such a crude and clumsy way. It is an ego trip for Smith and a mystery why he has even the three supporters in the REC. Perhaps Smith is still trying to get revenge on the party for not supporting him against the conservative/libertarian John Sununu in NH following Smith’s support of John Kerry and his flings with the fringe parties he joined after that.

  13. Dick Farrel Says:

I’d like just one Rubio Supporter, just one, to tell us just one reason, with solid verifiable facts that qualifies Rubio for the US sen at 38 with no other elected exp other than his patronage job as FLA house speaker in which he blocked bills to stop tax dollars to illegals, he used 1 million tax dollars to “”decorate his office”

His lip service to the 2nd ammendments activists..ask Marion Hammer about that. His lack of effort to support pro life positions,, nothing other than TALK from Rubio and his huge oral cavity on that

His lack of enthusiasm to STOP tax dollars going to Sami Al Arani’s terror school in Tampa, masquerading as the ISLAMIC ACADEMY

all this and all they got is a stinky letter Smith wrote in 2004?
gEORGE wASH pRES man 1776 SAID
“LET NO SQUABBLE FROM ANCIENT TIMES INTERFERE WITH MY COUNTRY’S DESTINY”

What else can you tag on Smith? the Chicago Fire? Aids? maybe you can blame him for the the Patriots loss in the playoffs.

RUBIO=RINO SMITH = Patriot END OF STORY

I will debate anyone anywhere on who is the more qualified and more conservative among the two

and i DID NOT hi five derek black
i WAS WAVING TO SOME ONE BEHIND HIM

  14. Spectator Says:

How is something like this allowed to happen under the watchful eye of Sid “Democracy isn’t a spectator sport” Dinerstein? Did he fall asleep watching the fireworks or was he getting a hot dog or chasing a fowl ball? Leave it to the PB REC to have another feather to add to their cap of ineffective & shameful ways. Honestly, who cares? Bob is campaigning here for what reason? Why is he even in this race. The PB REC means absolutly nothing and had gotten worse under the “watchful” eye of Dinerstein. This is the same guy who’s giving a pass to Ed Lynch in CD19, knowing the skeletons in his closet that Deutch’s Democrats are drooling over to use. Once again, Sid is sitting back watching this one too. He’s quite the spectator.

  15. To Spectator Says:

Senator Smith said why he is running here last night in his speech. Initially, the party was looking for someone other than Gov. Crist due to his Obama Man-hug. Rubio just happened to enter the race early and many impatient people “made up their minds” too quickly before seeing who all might get into the race.

I just want the most qualified person to win for Florida and from what I can see, Smith wins that spot hands down. It’s just more difficult for him to play catch-up to Crist’s money and Rubio’s earlybird followers.

I think Rubio has many good qualities as does the Governor, but with Rubio’s inexperience, the Dem’s would eat him alive right now as 99th or so in the Senate.

  16. Dick Farrel Says:

hey spectator….YOU SEE EYE TO EYE with me on this one….My so-called “tirade” Wed Night was well positioned, right on point and laser like in effectiveness.
I basicaly said what you said…a little more forcefully. THe host of the Sid Dinerstein show should have thrown the
Rubinuts out on their ashes. The were just there as guests,we not REC elected members like Myself and Jon Parsons and had no business getting the podium

Not to mention their rude and classless behavior when Parsons tried to state the case for the KErry 04 letter
btw..the sole and only bemish on Smith ‘s perfect 100 percent conservative record

  17. Kirk Says:

Smith was pretty petty when it came to 2004 no doubt about it. But he did damn fine work in trying to keep Elian Gonzalez here, standing up to protect the Everglades and standing against abortion. I know where Smith stands. I don’t know about Rubio. His conservatism seems to come down to “I’m not Charlie Crist.” Fine. But what does Rubio stand for? Immigration and amnesty? Como se dice flip flop? I keep seeing Rubio and keep thinking about Mel Martinez part 2. Oh but he is a conservative say the establishment conservatives. Just like they did with Mel Martinez.

  18. THE TRUTH. Says:

Love all the Bob Smith crazy people! First of all I was at that meeting and little dick FARREL ACTED LIKE AN ASS!2nd BOB SMITH DID IN FACT ENDORSE LIBERAL DEMOCRAT JOHN KERRY OVER PRES.BUSH JUST BECAUSE BUSH DIDNT ENDORSE SMITH. DOES A REAL REPUBLICAN DO THAT? NOT!!!! BOB SMITH HAS LESS THAN $15,000 IN HIS CAMPAIGN BANK ACCOUNT AND HE IS NOT EVEN POLLING! PLUS KNOW THE REAL STORY ABOUT MARCO RUBIO, THIS MAN IS THE REAL DEAL!! PS… little dick FARREL DID HIGH 5 DERECK BLACK AND CALLED MARCO RUBIO AND OTHER PEOPLE “WET BACKS!” http://www.redcounty.com/crainterview-marco-rubio-illegal-immigration.

  19. john Roane Says:

Keep fighting and name calling and the Democrat will take the seat. You are all fools and fall for the Dem plan every time. You all haven’t learned a thing.

Support that which you want by promoting that person not by tearing down the opponent, especially of your own party. Once you make a statement you can’t take it back and if it’s worth saying its worth putting your name on it.

I am from NH and proud to share my name John Roane.
