Special session bill another gift for CSX

by Michael C. Bender | December 9th, 2009

From Post columnist Frank Cerabino:

…somewhere in the recesses of CSX’s Jacksonville corporate office is a secret laboratory that distills batches of stupid potion — a bevy that has proven to be a real thirst quencher in the Florida Legislature.

For how else can you explain the magical ability of a company that made $1.3 billion profit last year to routinely persuade the Florida Legislature to act as its wholly owned charity, handing over hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars in exchange for … oh, let me calculate this … nothing.

this is absolutely ludacrist a bullet train to and from no where.guess it will create some jobs but at expense of taxpayers.they cant even get people to ride tri-rail for christ sakes.florida needs to get on the ball, legalize gambling and give tax breaks to companies to relocate there manufacturing operations here to put people to work and create jobs for all the citizens of florida instead of wasting money on a bullet train.makes me wonder if csx was a contributer to charlie christ campaign, sure sounds like a pay back to me.

I guess it’s true. You get your money for nothing. While the concept is good, Bill is correct. We can’t get people to use tri-rail. If Florida had a larger professional industry it may work to shuttle people from Tampa to Orlando but lets be real. This is a project to just do something. Why would tourists take this to Fort Lauderdale? The jobs we need aren’t construction but they are hoping construction will lead to other jobs. This rail will be a failure. It failed on the ballot years ago for a reason.

A train system would provide more use per person and mile than all the sound barrier walls (especially those with decorative art), mass plantings of palm trees spaced inches apart, and light poles every 5 feet of I-95 tax payouts. Sure it may take a while for taking the train to catch on especially if you do nothing to promote it. Which is exactly what is happening now! If a hotel chain gave a discounted room to people coming to town by train and picked you up at the train Senior groups would certainly get on board especially if somebody locally gave organized town tours.

I must say, I’m disappointed all around by our “Republican” leadership
