GOP opponent takes aim at U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz – literally

by Dara Kam | October 9th, 2009

wasserman-schultzA Republican hoping to unseat U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz literally set his sights on the Broward County Democrat at a shooting range, according to press reports.

Robert Lowry was one of the Southeast Broward Republican Club who went on a shooting spree at a gun range and fired assault rifles at targets including a man in a headdress holding a rocket-propelled grenade launcher.

Lowry’s target was a silhouette of a human figure with the initials “DWS” next to the head.

The target practice drew criticism from state Sen. Ted Deutch, a Boca Raton Democrat, who issued a statement condemning the event.

“In a nation that has a tragic history of violence against our leaders it is unconscionable that Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Shultz’s opponent would fire an assault rifle at a silhouette bearing her name,” Deutch said.

“Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz is a dedicated public servant who has earned the respect of her constituents. She deserves far more than a halfhearted apology. The Republican Party of Florida should condemn this candidate in the strongest terms. Unfortunately, this is just the latest example of outrageous vitriol in our political discourse and it needs to stop,” he concluded.

  1. Frank McDonald Says:

There are no depths too low for Republicans. I guarantee you that not ONE Republican will condemn this incident. For them, it is politics as usual. For the target of their misdeeds, it could mean assassination. Robert Lowry’s actions are an abomination.

  2. Todd B Says:

First, as a registered republican I’ll say that the Southeast Broward Republican Club showed extremely poor judgment.

Second, I take issue with this poorly written article with tons a spin on it. To describe a target shoot as a shooting spree wreaks of politically biased journalism and is terribly misleading to the general public. If the “journalist” was writing a fair and unbiased story she should have written something like, “the Southeast Broward Republican Club spent an afternoon target shooting at targets which included the initials DWS which is assumed to be U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz who is the democrats contender against one of the participants, Robert Lowry.”

  3. Chandra Says:

I am a Republican and this stunt was insane. At a time when it is getting harder and harder to defend being a Republican, this truly must be condemned. It seems to be more and more a competitive game then of elections of differing opinions. It is allowed to insight extremist factions that have exhibited hatred and violence.
It is beyond just partisanship. This was totally in very very poor judgment and NO ONE should downplay this at all. Republicans have lost the US House and Senate, and if we think this behavior is a winning practice, think again. You have major registration changes taking place, mostly from Republicans who are tired of the bad decisions, and switching to Independents. Where are the R leaders? Get rid of people like this do not condone this insane behavior and certainly do not encourage it.

Wow. A “shooting spree”. At a range. With paper targets. And real assault rifles (not really, but it makes for a good tag line and most people don’t know the difference). How horrifying.

Question: Does Debbie Wasserman USUALLY dress like an Arab and carry around an RPG? I mean, she’s a Democrat so she’s philosophically allied with Al Qaeda and longs to destroy the US, but does she ACTUALLY wear turbans and carry around an RPG? If not, if it wasn’t an actual picture of HER, I fail to see the problem.

Of course, Al Qaeda would make her wear a burka… female members of The People’s Socialist Democratic Party forget that.

  5. Chandra Says:

“tanksoldier” You are the reason the R party is going down. We have allowed absolute morons to take over the party. But then again how would the radical extreme and the corrupt find anyone to do their bidding if it were not for the morons?

  6. Chandra Says:

“tansoldier” Dont talk about Al Qaeda, have you heard some of the men in our party speak about the R women legislators? Many moron male R bloggers are always treating them horribly and with great disdain because they do not just do as they are told and actually have a mind of their own. You guys are ruining the hard work of many grass roots Republicans. Maybe it would be best if you dopes move over and let some of the R woman take over. Then maybe you may get back the R party.

  7. Charles Rinehart Says:

I’m sorry. What did Wasserman do to earn respect? I missed it. This is a serious question.

  8. Charles Says:

Charles Reinhart, so in your opinion its ok to do this if in your opinion she did not earn your respect? How about all the things she has fought for for the safety of children? I wont even engage you as you are truly a sorry individual.

  9. Katye Says:

    Charles Reinhart-
She battled and beat breast cancer while continuing to fulfill her roles as a mother, Congresswoman, etc.

  10. david flagg Says:

We are always hoping candidates will set responsible, rational examples of behavior and clear thinking……Mr. Lowry does not meet partisan or bipartisan standards. His “joke” over shooting a target with the initials “DWS” on it is not funny. Not when you’re a parent trying to raise children to respect others and abide by the law. Shame on Mr. Lowry.

  11. Charles Rinehart Says:

Wasserman is nothing but talking points. Even when she is pressed on the other side of the debate. I don’t care if she is a woman. Her bankrupt ideology is what hurts a country. Liberal. I’ve seen her do many interviews. A broken record she is. A phoney and a fraud. A lot of us are smart and can see right through her BS. Her constitutes is welfare and stupid people. It has to be for this thing to get elected. Great blog here.
