Former U.S. Rep. Clay Shaw helps rivals Bogdanoff, Domino raise money for GOP state Senate primary

by George Bennett | September 28th, 2009

Former Republican U.S. Rep. Clay Shaw of Fort Lauderdale is listed on the host committee for an Oct. 13 fund-raiser in West Palm Beach and an Oct. 15 event in Deerfield Beach for the state Senate campaign of state Rep. Carl Domino, R-Jupiter.

Shaw was also on the host committee for an Aug. 28 fund-raiser in Boca Raton for one of Domino’s GOP primary rivals, state Rep. Ellyn Bogdanoff, R-Fort Lauderdale.

The invitation to Domino’s Oct. 15 fund-raiser also lists Broward County GOP Chairman Chip LaMarca as a host committee member. But LaMarca has endorsed Bogdanoff in the Republican Senate primary.

What gives?

“I’m taking both sides, I guess. It’s rough when you have two friends in a race,” Shaw said. “The people in that Senate district are going to win either way.”

LaMarca said he’s personally endorsing Bogdanoff and his name on the Domino fund-raising invitation should not be seen as an endorsement. As party chairman, LaMarca said he agreed to be on the Domino invite “to be fair to everybody” and help Domino gain access to Broward Republican voters.

Bogdanoff, Domino and businessman Nick Loeb are in the GOP race for the Palm Beach-Broward seat of Senate President Jeff Atwater, a Republican who’s running for state chief financial officer.

Democratic state Rep. Kelly Skidmore of Boca Raton is also running in the GOP-leaning Senate district.

Since Obama won the district it is not GOP leaning. The district was happy with Sen. Atwater but now that he is vacating the seat a Democrat will will.

  2. PBGGOP Says:

It will be interesting to see how much Carl raises this quarter. I imagine if it’s less than a hundred bucks like last one, he’ll have a decision to make. When do they normally announce these figures ?

  3. Nice ! Says:

It’s nice to see LaMarca and Shaw taking spinelessness to a new level. The only one that can compete against those two is Dinerstein.

  4. Broward REC member Says:

When you are on THE “Host Committee” that means you are supporting THE candidate. What world am I living in.

  5. Young Conservative Says:

The Republican Club Chairman of any county or the Republican Party of Florida probably shouldn’t endorse any candidate in a primary and allow the members of the party to determine their candidate. It only creates an unnecessary division when party leaders endorse in a primary.
