Sansom not appointed to any legislative committees as House speaker reshuffles panels
by Michael C. Bender | August 24th, 2009Former House Speaker Ray Sansom, accused of hiding a private jet hangar in the state budget, was removed from all his legislative committee assignments Monday in a reorganization of the chamber’s leadership.
Sansom, R-Destin, who is fighting criminal charges in a trial scheduled to start Sept. 29, asked Speaker Larry Cretul in in an e-mail Monday not to assign him any committee work.
He is the first House member in a non-leadership position to be kept out of any committee action since 2007, when then-Rep. Bob Allen, R-Merritt Island, was charged with soliciting sex from a male police officer. Allen was ultimately convicted and resigned from the House.
The reorganization is just the latest ripple from Sansom’s indictment. Last week, Republican Party leaders including Senate President Jeff Atwater, R-North Palm Beach, returned their party-issued American Express cards after court documents revealed that Sansom had rung up $183,600 in charges in 24 months.
The reorganization, meanwhile, allows Cretul, R-Ocala, to put his own stamp on the chamber. He was installed as the replacement for Sansom, his friend and former session roommate, just days before the 2008 legislative session.
Cretul’s biggest change on Monday was to reassemble the House’s top budget council, which Sansom had split in two, and install Rep. David Rivera, R-Miami, as chairman.
But the move will cost Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast: The 18-member budget council has just two local lawmakers, Reps. Ellyn Bogdanoff, R-Fort Lauderdale, and Kelly Skidmore, D-Boca Raton. Six other local lawmakers who had served on one of the budget councils this year were reassigned to other panels.
Other changes Monday included Rep. Carl Domino, R-Jupiter, getting the top spot on the Civil Justice and Courts Policy Committee, and Rep. Debbie Mayfield, R-Vero Beach, receiving a spot in the GOP leadership as deputy whip.
Other notable changes:
*Rep. Kevin Ambler, R-Tampa, will no longer chair Health Appropriations and instead take charge of the Public Safety & Domestic Security Policy Committee.
*Rep. Paige Kreegel, R-Punta Gorda, will lose his spot as Energy & Utilities Policy chairman and instead take over Health Care Services Policy Committee.
*Rep. Stephen Precourt, R-Orlando, will takeover Kreegel’s spot on the energy committee and give the State Universities & Private Colleges Policy chair to Rep. Seth McKeel, R-Lakeland.
*Rep. Nick Thompson, R-Fort Myers, will trade his top position on the civil justice committee for the chair of the Health Care Regulation Committee.
