Former U.S. AG Janet Reno endorses Dan Gelber for state AG

by Dara Kam | August 12th, 2009

gelber-speechrenoFormer U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno endorsed state Sen. Dan Gelber for Florida attorney general today.

“Dan has the gumption and spirit to make the Attorney General’s office a vital force in the lives of Floridians,” Reno said in a press release issued today, saying Gelber would make a “splendid” AG.

Gelber, a former federal prosecutor from Miami Beach, is running in a primary against fellow Democratic state senator Dave Aronberg of Greenacres to replace Attorney General Bill McCollum, who is leaving office after one term to run for governor.

Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp is the leading GOP candidate in the race so far.

Reno, a Miami native, served under President Bill Clinton as the first female U.S. Attorney General.

Endorsements are meaningless in political campaigns. Dave Aronberg has the qualifications and leadership qualities to be our next Attorney General. We need new leadership in the Democratic Party, and Dave Aronberg is a leader.

Gelber has run for three offices in the last six months, State Senate, US Senate and now AG — make up your mind Dan. I support Dave Aronberg, and you should too. Take a look at his site for his qualifications

I have to agree with the above, as a loyal dem I have met them both and I think Dave Aronberg is the best suited to take on the republician party in this race! go dave!!!

While I can appreciate the enthusiasm for new leadership for Florida (and especially when it comes to consumer protection and crime), Aronberg’s not it. He feels entitled to this job. Sorry Dave, your adolescent tantrums won’t get you far…Dan Gelber is the most intelligent and loyal public servant in the state of Florida. Dan’s whole family is steeped in public service, and nobody knows our state’s needs better than he.

  4. Aronberg the Fraud Says:

Dave Aronberg has abandoned the people of Florida with his voting record. Look at SB 360 which allows construction companies to carve up the rest of the state while we have the highest foreclosure rate and our cities and towns have thousands of empty residences. Where is Aronberg when the FCAT is failing our schools?

If you look at Aronberg’s voting record he votes with the Republican Senate. He just wants this job because he is term limited.

Dan is a brilliant public servant and lawyer. He is rated in the Florida Superlawyers and Best Lawyers in America. He is eloquent, intelligent and the right man for the job. (And he voted against 360, the most reviled piece of legislative action since Terry Shaivo).

[...] Aronberg is trumpeting it as the first endorsement by a law enforcement official in the Democratic AG primary. But rival state Sen. Dan Gelber, D-Miami Beach, suggests he earned that distinction when he received the backing of former U.S. Attorney General and 2002 Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Janet Reno. [...]
