Attorney general or candidate for governor?
by Dara Kam | May 26th, 2009
Interest in Attorney General Bill McCollum is apparently on the rise since he announced his run for governor last week.
McCollum’s staff sent out the above photo to media this morning with the attached e-mail message:
“Good morning! I have received multiple requests for the Attorney
General’s official photograph, therefore, for the added convenience of
all our media contacts, attached below is the official photograph and a
link to the photograph online. Please feel free to use this photo for
future coverage of the Attorney General and his office. Thanks!”
The message – and the pic – didn’t come from his campaign office.
They came from Sandy Copes, the AG’s press secretary.
State law prohibits officials’ staff from working on their campaigns while they are performing their official duties. They are permitted to take time off from their regular jobs to work on the campaigns.

I did not think it was possible for the press to forget that it is a requirement to respond to public records requests.

so in her official capacity she emailed out the official office photo… how is this news or even close to her violating state law??
What about your ethics? are you a professional journalist or a Sink Campaign Staffer?

Seriously; it is idiotic posts and articles like these that make most American’s / Floridian’s sick. We just celebrated fallen veterans, there are wars going on, people without jobs, etc. And you thought it important to spend some of your time as a journalist talking about someone emailing a photo. Do me a favor and find someone nearby to you right now and ask them if they would please smack you.

Please be sure to read the message from the staff person.
Nothing was mentioned in the message about the AG’s camapaign for governor. Not one word. Only that some people are contacting his official office for his official picture. Perhaps those asking for his picture should contact his campaign office if they are using it in connection with his campaign. The fault lies with those asking for the picture, not the press secretary.
Stop fabricating violations. The reporter’s comments about the message and picture coming from the state staffer sound like an indictment. Focus on journalism and leave the law enforcement to others.
