Shylock struck from state statutes, but homosexual remains
by Michael C. Bender | April 27th, 2009Gov. Charlie Crist this morning signed a bill that would strike the work “shylock” from state statutes. Crist echoed supporters of the bill this morning, saying there is no room for discrimination in state statutes. Many say the term portrays negative Jewish stereotypes.
“One of Florida’s greatest strengths, obviously, is our diversity, and the fact that we have such a strong sense of mutual respect for all races, all religions, all people,” Crist said. “It is truly one of the greatest strengths of Florida.”
In the name of diversity, then, it’s worth noting here that the word “homosexual” remains in state statutes.
Few would consider that an offensive word, but there are plenty who feel there is plenty of prejudice in the sentiment expressed in the one statute where the term appears.
State Rep. Mary Brandenburg, D-West Palm Beach, has sponsored a bill for several years to delete statute, which bans homosexuals from adopting children.
Crist supports the statute and Brandenburg’s bill has never received a hearing in the Republican-led House.

Crist opposes the bill allowing gay adoption? Go figure. I have no problem with public figures staying in the closet. Its none of my business… until they become hypocrites. At this point, Crist deserves whatever scorn and derision he gets for his ridiculous facade. If honest gay people can’t be trusted to adopt, then dishonest gay people should not be trusted in public office.
