The Jefferson-Jackson dinner has long been a staple of Democratic Party money-raising around the U.S.
But it will no longer be in Palm Beach County.
Troubled by Thomas Jefferson’s slave-owning and Andrew Jackson’s “Trail of Tears” Indian relocation policies, local Democratic leaders have decided to switch the name for their annual dinner — tentatively scheduled for November — to honor 20th century Democratic presidents Harry S. Truman and Lyndon Baines Johnson.
County Democratic Chairman Mark Alan Siegel called Jefferson and Jackson “great Democrats, great builders,” but said the modern Democratic coalition traces its roots to the desegregation and civil rights policies of Truman and Johnson.
No word yet on whether the anti-nuke and antiwar elements of the Democratic Party will weigh in on the new name.
